MASPE stands for Miniscrew-Assisted Slow Palatal Expansion. It's an advanced orthodontic treatment used primarily in adults and older teens to widen the upper jaw (maxilla) when it's narrow.
This technique is a variation or gentler alternative to the more commonly known MARPE (Miniscrew-Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion).
Dr. Buxton provides a more specific method. He utilizes the DOMEzero protocols for expansion in adults.
DOMEzero is an innovative, synchronized treatment protocol for adults that combines minimally invasive palatal expansion with clear aligner therapy. It addresses narrow palates, crowded teeth, and airway issues more comfortably and aesthetically than traditional methods.
Developed as an evolution of MARPE techniques, DOMEzero (often using the DomeZero appliance) allows for parallel expansion of the maxilla while simultaneously aligning teeth — avoiding the noticeable diastema (gap) between front teeth that many patients worry about.
It uses a custom bone-anchored expander combined with clear aligners in a coordinated protocol. The expansion creates space, and aligners guide teeth into their ideal positions progressively.
